‘Welllllll………
you wake up in the morning you hear the work bell ring’, blares from the iHome at 5:00AM sharp and abruptly wakes me from a deep sleep. I smile as I think about how funny it is that this line of the song Midnight Special woke me on a Monday morning. Almost like myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope sending me a message to say ‘sleepy head – get out of bed….’
And so I hit the snooze button, made a note on my iPhone, then turned back over and close my eyes to try to take up where I left off…. ahhh yes, zzzzz………. We’re on the patio at NY Pizza Exchange, on a Thursday evening and myDarlin’ is kicking the Open Mic off with a couple of songs before getting friends up to play. ‘Wellllll…… you wake up in the morning you hear the work bell ring’…..
This song, as well as many others, reminds me of myDarlin’s retirement plan to play music. It was a two-phased approach, first to give up the fast-paced, demanding position he had fought so hard to achieve and second to totally give up the corporate work to just make music. In my mind, there was no need for both of us to continue working and the love of my life could be my full time chef and musician – and I would be his roadie. We both thought that it seemed to be the perfect plan…..
Tonight I am grateful for dreams...... The art that I gave him at his retirement still hangs on the wall of our bedroom; ‘Go confidently in the direction of your dreams’ and this is what I wrote for him on his first retirement…. Our dream? and they lived happily ever after….
