Gratitude Journal – Day 129 – November 6, 2014

I wish…
that we had gotten to know him better. There are so many wonderful musicians in the local music scene, each with their own amazing story. If my memory serves me correctly, myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope and I met him at Bella’s many years ago as he played congas. As he played music with his friends, one could immediately tell by the twinkle in his eye, that he was a kind gentleman.
And we saw him over the years at various events, and always said hello engaging in lively small talk. It was through my FB posting of photographs of Navarre Beach that we discovered he spent time just getting away there too. He told the story of sleeping in, then walking down the stairs of his condo directly onto the beach and I thought to myself, now that’s the life!
And he came to one of our Open Mic which happened to be packed that evening. myDarlin’ looked over to me with the silent communication asking if he wanted to play, but when I asked him – he said no, I think I’ll just listen. And we talked of the blessings in our lives, of myDarlin’s plans to retire to play music and of his to sell his business and decide what he wanted to be when he grew up. Maybe he would also just play music on the beach full time.
Tonight I am grateful that we had the pleasure of meeting you dear Frank Menendez. I bid you Aloha – not goodbye, for I will be there in due time to take photos of you and myDarlin’ as you play in the best band ever for eternity. And then, we will be able to take all of the time we need to get to know you better. Rest in peace music man.
