Almost eight months ago….
myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope wrote this on his timeline.
Twenty-Five years ago today, my Dad passed. I still hear his voice in my heart every day. And although there was a time in my life when I didn't always feel closest to him, his wisdom never abandoned me. He did so much in his lifetime, it amazes me. What amazes me more though, is what he instilled in me through his actions. He always stood up for what was right, even when it cost him. And for this he gained the respect of everyone he touched. From a young Paniolo to Plumber to Airline Pilot to General Contractor to Boat Builder and Marine Surveyor, he was never satisfied until he mastered his trade. I will never forget him telling me, "Whatever you choose do in life, be the best at it you can be."
Thank you Dad, I love you.
I’ve read this over and over, and recall how he would hold the ring made of gold with the jade stone, telling me stories of his Dad. A man who took time with his son to teach him the Hawaiian language, to play ukulele, to swim, to fish, to build and to show him what a loving relationship looked like.
Tonight I am grateful for the words myDarlin’ wrote to tell us how he felt about his Dad, a man I will never get to meet, but saw his spirit of wisdom in myDarlin. And he heeded his advice, as will his children and grandchildren for generations to come, “Whatever you choose to do in life, be the best at it you can be.”
