Gratitude Journal – Day 215 – February 1, 2015

Battle…
it is this that we prepare our young warriors for, even today in these modern times I thought to myself as I watched my grandsons sparring in preparation for the national competition next week. And the coaches for each side stood just outside of the ring, calling shots in code easily recognized by their boxer, but a foreign language to the opponent.
And the scene could have been at any point in history. Young men, learning the ropes, competing for rank and status are evenly matched by weight, age and experience so as to avoid one side having an unfair advantage. And their advantage at that point is preparation, stamina, support and sheer will power.
As the young warriors begin to master their own level, they push themselves to be matched at the next level for the challenge and mastery, and become the better for it as their coaches prepare them for life beyond the safety of the ring. For in the ring, they can see their opponent, and know what his intentions are. In the ring, there are coaches watching their back and making the call, giving them guidance each step of the way.
And now our children have grown, and stepped outside of the ring into the ring of life. Will they remember the lessons we taught them? Will they be equally matched in this bout? Will they continue to prepare themselves? Will they surround themselves with supporters? Will they always win?
Today I am filled with gratitude as I look back at the ring our children grew up in myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope. You can be proud of each and every one of them as they carry the lessons that we and our Ohana taught them, and pass those very lessons on to the next generation. And we all remember, just like he said during your celebration of life, that ‘you are always in our corner.’
