Gratitude Journal – Day 251 – March 9, 2015

The light at the end ….
of the tunnel. Years ago, when I was much younger and craftier than the average bear, I cross-stitched the saying ‘The light at the end of the tunnel is the headlight of oncoming train’. It seemed so funny in my younger days and I had little to base it on. And through the years, I encountered hardships as most of us do, and the saying wasn’t as funny as it once seemed, but by the grace of God and a little (OK – a lot) help from my friends, I made it through just fine.

And then…. there was a shift in my life and the same ones who helped me make it through, God and my friends and family - Ohana, all of a sudden projected (maybe even catapulted) me into a new positive way of life. And I realized that looking back at that tunnel; it was one I had to travel through in order to help others see the light. Today as it began to drizzle, I thought back to yesterday when they played ‘Stormy Monday’ and it hit me…. Ohana I am here to tell you that the light isn’t a train – it’s God and our Ohana, our community.

And as I walked about the room yesterday, you could reach out and feel the compassion and goodwill as our community wrapped Stephanie and her family in a blanket of love. And ironically enough, when we were thanked for all that we did, I could hear myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope saying ‘That’s what we do’. Yes myDarlin’, it’s what we do – we take care of our Ohana in times of need just as they have done for us.

Today I am filled with gratitude for the privilege of paying it forward, and know that this event will continue to ripple in the waters of our community.
