Paint the Mall Pink…
The day was October 5, 2012 and our good friends The Woodys asked Kona to play at the Mall of Georgia for the Paint the Mall Pink event in honor of Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Awareness. It’s funny how some moments stick out more so than others and in retrospect one realizes the importance of every moment.
Be happy for this moment, for this moment is Your Life. --- Omar Khayya’m
I can remember every detail of setting up, of myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Popeand the band working with the sound guy, to going into the mall to find pink ribbon pins for the band to wear to the pink jacket and boots I wore that day. Once the band was set up (myDarlin’ was early as usual), I set out to find the pins. Walking through the lawn, I tried my best not to aerate it with my heels and was glad to be back on concrete/solid ground. Directly before the entrance to the mall, was a beautiful fountain, not unlike any other you’ve seen, but the waters had been dyed pink!
I set my camera to a fast shutter speed and proceeded to have fun with capturing the droplets mid-air. There were no lapel pins to be found, however I did score two pairs of pink rhinestone ribbon earrings that would suffice, along with pink wristbands for the band. As I made my way back to the lawn/stage area, the sun began to set and soon the band would be playing.
After a couple of songs, myDarlin’ thanked the crowd for coming out and shared a personal story of why Women’s Health Awareness was so important to him.You see, his Mother had breast cancer many years ago, and today is still a survivor at age 97! Ironically, my Mother also had breast cancer in her early 40’s and survived many years afterward.
Fast forward to last October, when Kona created their own event titled, ‘Tips for Ta-Ta’s’ in which all tips were donated to charity. The band all wore pink, had a blast and raised a respectable donation for the Susan G Komen Foundation.
Tonight I am filled with gratitude for myDarlin’s and Kona’s commitment to supporting great causes such as Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Awareness, as it is through this that we can truly make a positive imprint on this big, crazy world of ours.
