Teamwork…
in play, in sports, in life. As I think back over today and what it took to put a surprise party together for a dear friend, I think of teamwork.
- What is the goal?
- Who do I want on myTeam?
- How will we work together?
- What does success look like?

When playing sports, it’s easy to answer these questions.
- The goal is to win the game
- I want talented, hardworking, motivated team members
- We work together by learning our position and the plays
- Success is exhibiting good sportsmanship no matter what the outcome, and of course winning is a bonus!

When it comes down to play, it looks the same with a twist using the surprise party as an example.
- The goal was to plan a party without the guest of honor knowing
- I want someone on my team who is talented, willing, organized, creative and trustworthy
- We work together in a collaborative way, identify the plan, divide and conquer
- Success looks like tonight did – with 50+ people keeping the secret surprise and making our guest of honor feel as special and loved as she does for all of us.

When it comes to life, it may not be as clear cut or then again, is it? They say (who is they anyway?!) that practice makes perfect and for myDarlin’ and me, the third time was a charm.
- The goal is to define and find true happiness
- I want mySoulmate on myTeam
- We’ll work together by learning our soulmate’s heart, talents and needs, then both striving to become one, yet maintain individuality.
- Success is what myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope and I achieved early on in our relationship and through constant awareness, maintained throughout the remainder of his years. Staying on the same wavelength via communication, being there to pick each other up if we fall, asking each other ‘What can I do for you’ on a regular basis and actually doing it, being able to read each other, having fun. Did we agree on everything? No, of course not. But here’s what we both realized – At this point in our lives, there’s not much to argue about and it is time to truly live our lives, focusing on what’s important – each other, God, Ohana……

Sports and activities are the foundation; simple structured tools that we use to teach our children about teamwork. Play builds on that foundation, and requires creation of a plan to achieve success in a specific timeframe. And life? Teamwork in life is a constant ebb and flow of trust, love, action and communication.
Today I am filled with gratitude as I think about teamwork, and each and everyone one of you who are ‘on our team’. Together our team can truly make a difference in our own lives and that of others.
