Life goes on….
and another Waffle House goes up. Why just the other day, I remarked to my friend that there is a brand new Waffle House on the way home from Ronnie John’s and I wondered when it would open. Even though it can’t have been more than two months since they broke ground, it seemed like forever that it was under construction.
And as you already know, it seems that the Southern icon Waffle House has played a major part in our lives. Whether it be myDarlin' Robert Kenui Popeand me, us and the band before or after a gig, our family or just myDarlin’, the bright yellow sign beckons us. It’s as if walking through that glass door takes us into a different world, one where people talk to one another, laugh and smile as they savor the most basic of foods being prepared. It reminds me of Cheers, where everybody knows your name and what you like to order.
And as we pulled into the parking spot in front of the entrance, and made our way in there seemed to be two cups of coffee magically waiting for us at the table. And she came over to ask, will it be the usual? How are the kids? Where did you play tonight? How about dem Saints? (OK – well, I threw that one in as most of our servers are Falcons fans thru and thru) We laugh, we share, we connect, we even take a photo that winds up being on our Christmas card.
It is February 14, 2013 as myDarlin’ and I make our way to Little Five Points to the Horizon Theatre. You see, a friend had posted an advertisement on my Facebook wall just a couple of weeks prior for a play, The Waffle Palace. And as we watch, we laugh, we cry as we understand that as often as life is filled with moments of pure joy, that it occasionally throws us a curve ball. On this particular day, a day that will forever be etched in my memory, we are at the height of happiness in our personal and work lives as we also celebrate our tenth anniversary of meeting each other in person.
I drive by the new Waffle House this evening and am filled with gratitude as it is packed with late night patrons who most likely do not realize that this ordinary night is truly an extraordinary one. I smile as I know that if myDarlin’ was with me tonight that we surely would have made the turn instead of heading home.
