Today as I pulled into the
parking lot to see our grandsons’ boxing matches, I thought about what it
really means to fight. In the moment we were in at the match, it is about using
one’s skills and determination, or fighting to be the winner for one’s age and
weight bracket while being judged. There are so many other times when fighting
is a part of our life:
-
Fighting sleep – I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat;
therefore this is something that I struggle with. I don’t’ have to fight it as
long as I am doing something or talking to someone, but the moment I sit down
and am quiet after a long day, I truly fight sleep.
-
Fighting traffic – As I make my way into work and pass over I-75
I glance over to see if the traffic is moving at a good pace as my decision
point. If it is, I’ll take I-75 and if not, I take the path of least resistance
down Atlanta road. I think that life is also like this – so many people strive
to be the same, to take the same path – such as keeping up with the Jones’s, so
I choose to listen to my own drummer (or bassist J) and
take a path less traveled that will still get me to the same destination.
-
Fighting to find a good parking spot – This is one that people
struggle with every day. As in life, we surround ourselves with those who are
like minded, so that we feel connected, we want to park close to our
destination, knowing that our vehicle is safe.
-
Fighting with each other – myDarlin’ and I didn’t fight. Some of
you may not believe it, so let me explain. Our lives had taken parallel paths
and we really believed it was God that brought us together (with a little help
from the T-Mobile Love Game). It’s not that we always saw everything in exactly
the same way, but we knew that simply discussing a situation or issue would
achieve so much more than fighting.
-
Fighting for your life – We all experienced this last year when
myDarlin’ had a heart attack and fought for his life. And while we were all in
his corner cheering him on, it took him having the determination to live and
God’s grace to allow him to do so.
-
Fighting for what we believe in – It is our responsibility to
stand up for what we believe in and not compromise our values when it is easy
or convenient to do so.
And then, there are times when
we don’t win the fight and God calls us home; or have we already won and it’s
hard for us to see or realize it? Today I am filled with gratitude as I know
that myDarlin’ joins hosts of angels that are behind the veil cheering us on as
we continue our fight here on earth. When we were preparing the program for his
service, I asked our pastor for a scripture, and he gave us this:
“I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
