H2O…

Water….. One of God’s best gifts to us, ever. Yesterday as our Ohana sat around and played in the pool, I began to think about the role that water has in each and every one of our lives. I heard a new acquaintance speak of taking his family to the beach for a tournament, and that his wife and children had never seen or been in the ocean. I am happy for them that they were able to spend time at the beach, and a little sad that his wife grew up without knowing the joy of the ocean.
Our bodies are made up of 50-65% water, so it’s only natural that we should be drawn to the ocean. Since myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope was born and grew up in Hawaii, he had so many stories to share about the ocean; of swimming and diving with the fish and honu; of fishing from a boat or the shore, of surfing the waves. He told me of the ocean belonging to everyone and then again no one, and of respect that all Hawaiians hold for the ocean.
Like so many others, I carry an umbrella to protect me (OK – my hair) from the rain. myDarlin’ didn’t carry one, but not just because he didn’t think it was ‘manly’. I remember the first time he experienced rain after his heart attack in March of 2013; he just stood there in the rain, grinning from ear to ear. And as I got my umbrella out, he lovingly said to me, “It’s only water.”
I am grateful for H2O, for water, for agua – God’s gift to us. A gift that fulfills so many of our needs, including baptism – a public declaration and representation of the cleansing our soul when we receive Christ as our Savior. And as I walked into the church the day after myDarlin’ passed, it began to rain…. I smiled, looked to the heavens and said, “myDarlin’, it’s only water.”
