The year was 2010, and myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope and I were trying to decide on what Halloween costume to don. We were a very convincing Ozzy & Sharon the year before, and wanted to up our game by adding music. Of course, Sonny & Cher was a logical decision.
And so I began gathering the makings for our costumes, including peace signs and head bands, wigs and tie dye. Wait! I really didn’t have to look further than his closet for the tie dye. myDarlin’ tried wearing the moustache, but it kept falling off and was downright hilarious. And then we chose the songs, I got you babe and The beat goes on. What seemed so simple actually took much more work than I thought it would. And so we practiced, in the car, at Leilani’s, in the shower (alone of course)…. and yes, in bed. At the time, our daughter Chelle was living with us and her bedroom was next to ours. I know that she either thought us crazy or just funny when she would hear us singing and cracking up as we lay in bed. I think about how many nights we lie in bed and just chat (or sing on occasion) and know that I am blessed to have been married to my best friend and Soulmate
Going through the hard drives looking for specific photos for a friend, I come across a video that I had made of our practice session, and find myself smiling ear to ear. I love the imperfection, the conversation, the kindness and patience he shows me as we sing The Beat Goes On. La-di-da-di-da-di-di……
And Halloween arrives, and we head out for the evening to find a couple of spots to ‘perform’. The crowd is familiar and very supportive of the fun that we are having.
And we end the evening at….. of course, Waffle House, laughing and loving this wonderful life of ours.
Today I am grateful that the beat goes on in each one of our hearts. The unmistakable beat of love and passion for this life and all who we have the opportunity to share HIS love with.
