Gratitude Journal – Day 68 – September 6, 2014

Oh when the Saints…..

win the game! A well-known fact about myDarlin’Robert Kenui Pope is that he loved the New Orleans Saints and has ever since he was a young man in Hawaii. Since Hawaii didn’t have a professional team, he adopted the Saints and has been loyal ever since. He talked of working at the Hyatt in New Orleans which is connected to the Superdome, and how they would host the team for home games.

He believed in his Saints regardless of how they were doing, always cheering them on and never taking a single defeat to heart. And when they won the Super bowl, well let’s just say that he was beyond ecstatic. I went online immediately and got him the hat, the shirt, the beach towel and the DVD. And I think it was Chelle who got him a set of Saints Super bowl shot glasses. Needless to say, our home is full to the brim of Saints paraphernalia.

We both put on our Saints jerseys a couple of years ago and took a photo that has graced the Facebook wall of our Falcon fan friends many times. (fair warning - it will surface again….) Robert would do the jersey bet with anyone that would take it, if the Saints won – they had to wear the Saints jersey and if their team won – he would wear theirs at Open Mic. If our Saints were on a winning streak, he wouldn’t allow me to wash the jersey that he wore during the games. (just a little superstitious, huh?)

Just a few months ago, we bought tickets to this Sunday’s Saints/Falcons game – good seats and he was so excited to go to the game. We decided then that next year we would go to New Orleans to see the game as well. And so now, our daughters will now go to the game in our place and cheer on the Saints and their Dad!

And when I think of the passion that myDarlin’ had for his dear Saints, it mirrors the passion that he had for life. It didn’t matter if you won or lost, it was how you played the game; with heart, effort, patience and loyalty to those you love. He was always encouraging you to try something for the first time, or to get back up and try again.
And I think back to the sermon that Pastor Denice gave a few Sundays back about our loved ones that have gone before us, cheering us on in all that we do in the name of the Lord, from behind the veil. I am grateful today for myDarlin’ helping to teach all of us a life lesson that we should support and cheer each other on in the same way that he did the Saints. Win or lose, keep cheering!
