Gratitude Journal – Day 87 – September 25, 2014

The greatest love…..
As I pulled out of my son’s driveway this evening on my short drive home, I touched the button to turn the radio on and this song by Nat King Cole enveloped the air around me.
There was a boy
a very strange enchanted boy.
They say he wandered very far, very far,
over land and sea.
A little shy and sad of eye,
but very wise, very wise was he...
Until one day,
One lucky day he passed my way,
And while we talked of many things
Fools and kings,
This he said to me:
"The greatest thing
You’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved in return.”
My mind is racing with the parallels to myDarlin’s life as I stop at the bottom of the winding road, and pause before continuing through the intersection. I see and react to my surroundings; however seem to be in a surreal autopilot state as I pull into our drive flanked by Kona flags.
There was a boy….a very strange enchanted boy…… This reminds me of myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope telling stories of how blessed he was to have been adopted by two of the most loving parents ever. He knew this was a gift from God that presented him with opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise.
Groceries in tow, I would normally have asked myDarlin’ to come help me in, but now there’s only a couple of bags. Hello myDarlin’, I’m home I say out loud and blow three kisses his way. The autograph heart pillow that he got last year at the hospital sits on a chair in the living room. It seems like forever ago, and then again just like yesterday that I wrote with a Sharpie, ‘You are my heart Darlin’ Love, Sheri’ amongst all of the other messages of love from our kids and Ohana.
I pause, and smile as I look around and see the Kona blinking heart pin that we bought for a Valentine’s Day gig this year. I can still see myDarlin’ sitting on the couch looking through the catalog, trying to decide what would be the most impactful yet economical promo item. Ink pens? …nah - Koozies?.... nah – blinking heart shaped pins? ding, ding, ding!!!! And he was like a little boy when the package came; testing each one to make sure they blinked. He looked at me and said, “Funny as it seems now, these little pins will be very important to someone one day. They’ll find it tucked away in a drawer and memories of the day they got it will come rushing back. Hopefully Kona will be part of those fond memories.”
One lucky day he passed my way…. the feeling of excitement and anticipation danced about the crisp evening air as we met all of those years ago. It was as if the missing puzzle piece to my life had just been slipped into place. And I knew, we knew – this is the real deal – Love at first sight. I often find myself telling others that there is the perfect someone for everyone, and I believe it with all of my heart and soul. All you have to do is to truly ‪#‎LetGoLetGod‬.
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return….. Yes, yes, yes. It is a truly amazing feeling and state of being to see others looking through a lens of love and understanding, and to be seen by the same lens. And through that lens, each day becomes a dance of giving and receiving. For whatever you give is returned to you ten-fold.
And he drew a big flowing open heart on her birthday card, which she recently found in a box tucked under the bed. It’s not clear what year he gave her the card, but does it really matter the year when a love is a timeless as theirs?
Today my heart is filled with gratitude as I thank God for sending the most perfect love to me, and allowing us to share our love with our children and Ohana. And yes myDarlin’, the Kona heart pin evokes memories of a special night etched in my mind for eternity.
Faith, hope, love…. The greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13
