Throw Back Thursdays….

This used to make me think of photos from long ago, but as I drove home from tonight’s dinner with girlfriends, it hit me. Ever since June of 2011, the first and third Thursday of every month was Open Mic hosted by Kona at the New York Pizza Exchange. It was there that we made new and nurtured existing friendships. There were those who came out every two weeks, and others that would drop in from time to time, there were seasoned artists and those just beginning their craft.
Toward the end, myDarlin Robert Kenui Pope was hosting the Open Mic by himself and doing a fine job of it. He would arrive early to set up and was so happy to have a Bose system that was lightweight and would fit in the back of Tacoma. Performing the opening set by himself, he was building his set list so that he could do solo afternoon/early evening acoustic performances once he retired. His face would light up with every person that walked onto the patio and would make his way over to greet them. Invariably the ending set of the night would be everyone getting up together to sing and play together, often times to the song ‘Teach Your Children Well’ by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
There are Thursdays that I think to myself that I need to get out of work at a decent hour to drive down the hill into Vinings to be with and help myDarlin’ greet our friends as they come to play, to listen, to eat and to fellowship. I blink and realize it was just my imagination. Today, I am grateful for myDarlin’, our music Ohana and the memories. The laughter and music still permeate the atmosphere on the patio at New York Pizza Exchange as the train passes into the night.
