Rock and Roll life lessons, that is. The Yabba dabba do whistle blows and I head out of the door for the weekend, giving Homer a high five on my way out of the parking lot. (For those that follow my Instagram feed – Makalani- this will make sense) It’s time to get the weekend started with; you guessed it, live music with friends at my favorite restaurant.
So many of our friends are there, and as I greet each one, I try to remember when myDarlin’ and I met them. Familiar songs float about on the patio, while friends chat or listen intently. And then someone requested this song. I know the song well; it is about a teen driving fatality, not about a common sense, middle age, safe driver like myDarlin’. And the chorus came and so did the teardrops.
Oh where, oh where, can my baby be?The Lord took him away from meHe's gone to heaven, so I've got to be goodSo I can see my baby when I leave this world
As I wipe my eyes, she comes over to ask if I am crying or sweating, and I take the opportunity to change the topic as I want to save my tears for my private conversations with myDarlin’ when I get home.
Home again, I begin the download for the evening and think about what to write in my Gratitude Journal. I have an old hard drive hooked up as I was searching for older photos for a friend’s website, so I began to browse….. Premonition was the first band that Robert was in here in the ATL and this is an excerpt from a monthly newsletter that he wrote. What I cannot be sure of is if these are his written words or from another author, but I assure you that these are exactly his sentiments.--------------------------
With a Little Help from My Friends…
One of the very last songs Lennon and McCartney wrote together came about while they were both sitting in Pauls’ house at his piano. Recorded with Ringo singing the lead, they were once again widely bashed publicly for writing songs about drugs (friends=drugs), even by former Vice President Spiro Agnew.
“I get high with a little help from my friends” is an ambiguous statement and, like all great songs, is left to the interpretation of the listener. I look at it this way…There’s something inside all of us that wants to be independent. Asking for friends help isn’t the easiest thing to do. We believe in self-help, “pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps.” Sometimes it’s not enough. The truth is that sometimes we do need a little, and sometimes a great deal of help, from our friends. Reaching out and receiving help from a friend can be a very humbling and healing experience. We’ve all been there.
Are you there for your friends? Ask yourself how you can be more tuned in to the silent pleas of those close to you. Sometimes all it takes is an attentive, non-judgmental ear.
“Yes I get by with a little help from my friends, with a little help from my friends.”Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967--------------------------
And I am filled with gratitude as I reflect on life’s lessons and the important role that our friends and family- our Ohana- have played in our lives since myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope left this crazy world of ours. From jumping in to help take care of arrangements, getting flowers, planting a garden and mowing the grass, cleaning the carpets, fixing the AC in the truck, sharing your memories, hugging and supporting all of us. Your kindness & love is so appreciated.... Mahalo nui.
