Gratitude Journal – Day 304 – May 2, 2015

The match….
one of the biggest of our times…To celebrate the occasion, they hosted a party of the proportions that run in our Ohana. And they cleaned and built and prepared in the week leading to the party. The guests? Young men and women from the boxing gym, each predicting or hoping they were right about the outcome.
And if I could paint a picture of the afternoon before the fight, I would start with fluffy white clouds floating through the bluest of skies, against a backdrop of a green jungle of foliage. The aqua blue waters of the concrete pool sparkled like diamonds as the bright sun warmed the air. Pool noodles of orange, blue and chartreuse mingled with the spray of water droplets flying into the air as children jumped, were catapulted or simply fell into the water.
The family dogs formed a welcome committee, in addition to being one of the most efficient clean up teams ever. No worries here about ants getting any of the food that lined the tables on the new deck in the corner next to the pool. Conversation and laughter rose through the atmosphere along with the savory aromas from the grill.
And the sun would set bringing many indoors, while others lingered on the deck lit so subtly by the glow of the solar powered lights. The kids played Apples to Apples in the living room, while the guys talked smack in the family room and the ladies laughed in the dining room. And then it started.. the long awaited match. Cheering, jeering, friendly banter was batted across the room like a ping pong ball match.
I looked around the room and realized that there are no losers today, in this room, in the game of life…. All of these young boxers and their families are winners as they strive to achieve their goals in boxing and in life.
Today I am grateful that even at the end of the match, when a winner has been names, that both sides can shoot their confetti guns towards the sky in celebration of the journey. And I know that as myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Popelooks down on all of us that he is proud of the good fight we live each day.
