Throwback Thursday….
It didn’t really start out that way, but the later it got – the more evident it became. Lunchtime – time to figure out what to do for the evening. It was then that I saw the post, one of my favorite musicians and persons playing right around the corner from work.
I called the girls to meet me there, and was delighted that they both said yes. As I pulled into the parking lot, another driver sped right in front of me, into, and then through the parking spaced I was pulling into. Yep, some things never change.
As my foot hit the ground, and I rose from the driver’s seat, I could hear the music making its’ way across the parking lot to welcome me with a familiar tune and voice. I began to walk toward the door and knew that myDarlin’Robert Kenui Pope was with me. For it was here that we spent so many nights listening to, playing with, taking photos of those that soon became our Ohana.
Tonight, it was just her…. playing some of the same tunes, sprinkled with new, performing on the same stage that she, myDarlin’ and so many others had graced before. I looked around and saw many of the same regulars as though I had never missed a week. A young lady came rushing in from the patio to see just who was singing, and proceeded to sing along with her. And even though she was laughing, dancing and singing backup vocals , I sensed a sadness about her.
A drink in her hand, she sat with us; a regular by her own definition…. hard working with two jobs, going through some incredibly hard times, she repeated the same story over and over not giving us a chance to interject to reassure her that even in the hard times, that our Lord has our back. And then the young woman was gone. And I pray that God will lay his healing hands on her Mother and give her peace.
We turn our attention back to our friend, as she sang an old song, ‘Will you still love me tomorrow…” I close my eyes for a moment and see him there with her… “So far away, holding you again could only do me good….” And then, I think way back to the day when she came walking in at an open mic for the first time and everyone was blown away by her voice
Tonight I am filled with gratitude for music, those who make the music and the memories that linger. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Psalm 100
