Gratitude Journal – Day 310 – May 8, 2015

On gratefulness ….
I wake from a peaceful sleep to the obnoxious sound of the alarm, opening my eyes to see the soothing walls of grey adorned by paintings of red flowers, hit the snooze and roll over to pull the covers back over my head. I need a few moments with God and memories of myDarlin’ Robert Kenui Pope to begin the day. Ahhhh…. now that’s better.
The snooze is just as alarming as the first and I throw off the quilt of his and my old t-shirts, stretching my arms to the sky…. well, ok the ceiling. I look just past my feet (which badly need a pedicure) and see the chair…. An ordinary chair by most people’s account, but for me it is even more special than it is cute. For just last year, we drove to the mountains and as we were almost to the cabin, we passed a roadside market. And myDarlin’ said to me, no chairs, OK? (if you don’t’ know me, I have a thing for chairs and stools) OK, I replied…. then I saw it – a perfect match for our bedroom, and I turned to him doing my best to bat my eyelashes. Well, the next thing you know, he is loading the chair in the back of the truck, shaking his head and laughing. So even though this chair is just a ‘thing’, it represents so much more…. It is a memory of a moment, conversations, laughter and love.
Feet on the ground, I walk to the window and pull back the draperies to reveal a blue sky sprinkled with clouds as the backdrop for the tall trees beyond which the small lake sparkles in the sunlight. Keep looking up I hear in the back of my head, it’s going to be a great day.
I ask you, when you open your eyes, do you look at the possibilities that today offers? As you pour a cup of water to the half way mark, is it A) half full or B) half empty? And while there is no technical right or wrong answer, your choice will impact the remainder of your day. Today, I am filled with gratitude for our Lord, Ohana, chairs, memories and a glass half full – for it is the recipe of abundance.
