Gratitude Journal – Day 21 – July 21, 2014

“Let me take a picture of you, I’ll bet you’re never in the photographs” is a common phrase heard by photographers everywhere.

Even before the wonderful smartphones and small digital cameras were so prevalent, I was taking couples selfies of myDarlin and me. The first time that Robert came over to my place, I told him to wear blue jeans and a black long sleeved t-shirt so that we could take our photographs. I have to smile when I imagine what he thought about my quirky ways in our first few months of dating. I set my film camera up on a tri-pod and used the timer setting to take the photos, necessitating running into the shot each time smiling and trying to look relaxed. In hindsight, a remote would have been great, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun.

Over the years, myDarlin’ and I have taken hundreds of photos of the two of us, but I can honestly tell you that I always wanted more. Each photo has a story to tell, each photo has captured a split second in our beautiful life that will live for all eternity.

I changed my profile picture when I found this photo that was taken (by me) in Hawaii in 2006. It was my first visit to Hawaii and I was mesmerized by the beauty of this paradise as the trade winds gently danced with the trees while Robert gave me the Local Boy tour of the island. This day was the first of only three times that I wore this dress, the second was the day we married and the last at myDarlin’s memorial service. I knew exactly what I wanted the photograph to be, but my technical expertise and people walking through our shot on the beach didn’t quite match my vision. After what seemed like an eternity to Robert, I finally got the right exposure and flash, with no one walking through the shot resulting in this photo that I treasure.

Today, I am filled with gratitude when I hear the sound of a click…… And what is in a click? Love, laughter, memories…… Get your camera, your iPhone or whatever device you prefer, and click away with those you love. Capture your everyday, which is the stuff life is made of. I can confidently tell you that one day you will be glad you did.

Today’s moments are tomorrow’s memories……..
