The 4th of July and Spam. Really? I am grateful for all of our service
men and women who fought for our freedom, both here and departed. Multitudes have given their lives, bodies and
souls to protect our freedom, and for that I am forever grateful. We must stop
and reflect on what it truly means to lay down your life for your country, and
demonstrate respect, love and honor by taking care of our veterans.
In 1937, long before my time, Hormel held a contest to name
the meat that would become a major staple in our service men and women’s diets.
With a single serving containing 57% of the daily recommended allotment of
sodium, you can imagine that it is very tasty and it never expires. I don’t think
that I had ever had Spam before I met myDarlin’ Robert and quite honestly
turned my nose up at it. And then…. he
introduced me to Spam Musubi and fried Spam sandwiches. Oh my! I don’t know
that I will ever be the same. I also learned that Hawaii has the highest per
capita consumption of Spam and that there are all kinds of great trinkets, such
as Spam slippers, coolers and t-shirts.
After Robert had his first heart attack, you can imagine
that with a low sodium diet, Spam was the first thing to go. He did have fun
teasing the nurses and nutrionists by wearing his Spam t-shirt to our first
Heart Rehabilitation meeting last year. He was always making people laugh, even
in light of the fact that he hadn’t had Spam since March of 2013.
So, on this 4th of July, I am grateful for our
service men and women, and the memory of myDarlin’ Robert in his Spam t-shirt
grinning ear to ear.
